Only went to the evening workout today. Topic of the day was "spinning and turning kicks." After a nice long warmup of stretch kicks, we worked kicks from the ground, the application of which is a grab of the sleeve or of the dobok pants, turning into a sliding side kick. We then worked a turning side kick from the ground, which involved a closed stance.
There were a number of points brought up about the turning side kick. One was in order to get in properly, one had to slide the front foot very close to the attacker (in jujitsu, one steps on the ankle). Another plus about getting in properly was not dropping the knee to the ground, which can shatter the knee on impact. Sliding the foot forward gives some tension.
Afterwards we covered the shuttle kick, which is a kick from the hip instead of from the knee. Powerful but very short, is good for when someone has you by the sleeve or when you're leaning against each other. The shuttle kick can move very quickly into a jumping turning side or a jumping turning back kick if the person moves.
